Mindanao, long associated with security issues, is now seeing a dramatic shift toward becoming one of the safest regions in the Philippines. According to the latest Mindanao Safety Rating survey by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), the region’s safety rating rose to 89.69 percent in 2024, a significant jump from 88 percent in 2023. This improvement is particularly noticeable in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Barmm), where local communities are experiencing greater security and economic stability.
A Comprehensive Look at Mindanao’s Safety
The quarterly survey, which gathers insights from over 7,200 respondents across Mindanao, including residents and travelers, has become a valuable tool in tracking perceptions of safety. Dr. Adrian Tamayo, MinDA’s Policy Formulation Division officer-in-charge, emphasized that the survey follows rigorous methodologies used by top polling firms, ensuring accuracy. The results, with a 3 percent margin of error, showcase safety ratings for different provinces across Mindanao.
Peace Efforts and Resilient Communities Drive Change
Notably, provinces like Basilan and Lanao del Sur in Barmm achieved a 95 percent safety rating, while Cotabato City scored 90 percent. Other areas such as Davao Oriental, Zamboanga City, and Iligan also received high safety marks, reflecting improvements in local governance and peace initiatives. These positive changes are attributed to the region’s ongoing peace efforts, governance reforms, and the resilience of communities, especially in areas that were once considered unstable.
International Recognition Boosts Confidence
International recognition is also following suit. Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently classified Mindanao as “Level 1: Very Safe,” signaling growing global confidence in the region’s safety. As more countries adjust their travel advisories, Mindanao’s tourism and economic potential could soar, signaling a bright future ahead for the region.
