Sulu Opens New Hall of Justice to Improve Access to Legal Services

Access to legal services in Sulu is set to improve following the inauguration of a newly constructed Hall of Justice in Barangay Bangkal, led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo on October 20. The facility is intended to bring court proceedings and judicial services closer to residents of the island province.

The opening comes as Sulu continues to strengthen its institutions following its transition toward stable internal peace and security. Provincial officials see the new facility as a way to reduce barriers to legal recourse while reinforcing accountability, protecting individual rights, and supporting the delivery of essential public services.

New Judicial Facility Aims to Make Legal Proceedings More Accessible

Sulu Vice Gov. Abdusakur Tan said the new Hall of Justice is designed to support more efficient court proceedings and provide residents with greater access to judicial services. The facility brings together courtrooms and offices for judges, lawyers, court personnel and litigants, offering a dedicated setting for handling legal matters.

Tan said the project addresses geographic and institutional obstacles that have long made it difficult for some residents to seek timely legal remedies. He also emphasized the importance of establishing reliable judicial infrastructure to help protect individual rights and resolve civil and criminal disputes within the legal system.

The vice governor added that the modern facility could help reinforce the province’s progress toward peace and stability by strengthening accountability and providing an institutional safeguard against a possible return to lawlessness. Local officials are hopeful that improved court facilities will contribute to faster case resolutions and greater public confidence in judicial processes.

National Government Reaffirms Support for Justice and Public Services

During the inauguration, Marcos reiterated the national government’s support for the judiciary and stressed the importance of ensuring that judicial institutions serve Filipinos effectively. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to a smooth transition for Sulu, including the continued delivery of health services, additional plantilla positions, and the absorption of teachers into the regional administrative structure to sustain education services.

Gesmundo, meanwhile, underscored the need for coordinated action across government agencies to achieve lasting institutional development and build a more just, stable and peaceful society. He also emphasized that public confidence in the justice system depends on the integrity of the people working within it, particularly in upholding fairness, accountability and the rule of law.

The October 20 inauguration also gave provincial and national leaders an opportunity to discuss broader development programs intended to sustain economic growth across Sulu’s 19 municipalities. The project reflects efforts by both levels of government to strengthen essential services alongside the province’s continuing development.

A courthouse alone cannot guarantee swift justice, but accessible facilities can help remove practical obstacles that keep people from pursuing their rights. As Sulu works to sustain peace and strengthen public institutions, the real measure of the new Hall of Justice will be whether residents can resolve disputes more efficiently, access fair proceedings, and trust that the law protects them regardless of their location or circumstances.
