The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) have relaunched the Innovations for Filipinos Working Distantly (iFWD PH) program in Caraga, offering science-based livelihood opportunities for returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Now in its sixth cycle, iFWD PH provides business development assistance, including training, mentorship, and technology support, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
From Crisis Response to Sustainable Livelihood
The iFWD PH program began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to help repatriated OFWs rebuild their lives. Over the years, it has shifted from emergency response to long-term support. DOST-13 Director Noel Ajoc emphasized that the program now focuses on using science and technology to create lasting livelihood opportunities for returning workers.
Training and Mentorship at the Core
According to Rodel Deligero, officer-in-charge of OWWA 13 (Caraga), 12 OFWs have been initially endorsed for this batch, with more expected to join. Participants will undergo two to three months of structured training. “Our OFWs will undergo comprehensive training, mentoring, and coaching,” Deligero said. Weekly modules led by experts will cover core business skills such as entrepreneurship, financial planning, and market strategies.
Open and Ongoing Enrollment
The program remains open to more OFWs, and both DOST and OWWA encourage interested individuals to apply. By equipping returnees with practical tools and technology-based support, iFWD PH aims to help them start or strengthen their businesses locally. The initiative not only boosts individual livelihoods but also contributes to regional economic growth.
