For environmental recovery and rehabilitation, the Sugba Lagoon tourist site in Del Carmen, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, will be temporarily closed from January 10 until February 10, 2025.
Municipal Ordinance No. 045 of 2019, which establishes a 32-day "Tourist Holiday" annually, requires the yearly shutdown.
To facilitate the upkeep and restoration of tourism amenities as well as the site's environmental recovery, the ordinance forbids access and other activities within Sugba Lagoon in Barangay Caub during this time.
Famous site in Siargao
From Del Carmen Port, visitors must take a 20–30 minute boat voyage through a massive mangrove forest to reach Kangbangyo Island, the location of the lagoon, one of the most popular tourist spots on Siargao Island.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) recognized the municipality of Del Carmen as the 2024 regional winner of the Philippine Tourism Awards' Eco-Tourism Destination of the Year.
Travelers can still visit other sites, like the Mangrove Forest, Kawhagan Sandbar, and Pamomoan Beach, which are still open despite the closure of the lagoon.
Sugba’s beauty
Surrounded by lush islets, Sugba Lagoon boasts some of the most amazing bright blue-green water in Siargao.
Paddleboarding, kayaking, and wading on bamboo rafts are popular activities here since the lagoon is extremely tranquil. Snorkeling, even among innocuous jellyfish, can also be enjoyed by visitors.
