The Pangasinan State University (PSU) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) have teamed up to test the "Tara, Basa! (Let's Read)" tutoring program.
It is a hallmark program of the Marcos administration that aims to give young people access to financial options while addressing the fundamental literacy gaps among struggling students.
Youth participation
The program will involve 50 youth volunteers from the Lingayen Campus, primarily sophomore and junior college students, and approximately 100 student tutors.
“This initiative focuses on improving literacy and academic performance for underprivileged or at-risk children. It is aligned with PSU’s mission to provide quality and inclusive education for all,” PSU president Elbert Galas said.
During the 20-day May–June school break, tutoring sessions will be offered.
Well compensated
The program consists of six parts: youth development workers and tutors' capacity building; tutoring sessions for students; parent workshops; tutors' and parents' cash-for-work opportunities; and referral services.
According to the DSWD, parents or guardians of children who participate will get PHP235 for each session that is finished.
After completing all 20 sessions, tutors will get payment based on the local minimum wage.
