Asia’s First Exorcism Center Opens In Makati

The Philippines now hosts Asia’s first exorcism center with the opening of the St. Michael Center for Exorcism and Spiritual Liberation in Guadalupe, Makati City. Named after St. Michael the Archangel, the center aims to help those experiencing “spiritual distress.” Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose F. Advincula led the blessing and inauguration, joined by exorcists from the archdiocese, headed by Fr. Jocis Syquia.

“This is not just the opening of a building, but the consecration of a mission,” Advincula said. The center will provide a space for exorcism rites, prayer, pastoral care, and spiritual healing, offering guidance to those seeking support in their spiritual journey.

Understanding Different Forms of Struggle

The cardinal stressed that not all suffering comes from demonic forces. “The Church distinguishes between psychological, social, and spiritual realities,” he said. Still, he acknowledged that sin and evil can trap people in fear, addiction, hatred, and despair.

Advincula highlighted what he called “various forms of bondage” affecting society. Corruption, injustice, and violence represent the “bondage of evil,” while sickness and poverty can isolate and suffocate hope. He emphasized that spiritual liberation is closely linked to practical acts of mercy, solidarity, and social support.

Facing Fakery, Lies, and Spiritual Challenges

The cardinal also warned about the “bondage of fakery and lies,” noting how misinformation and dishonesty—especially online—can trap people even without visible chains. He urged communities to value truth, verify information before sharing, and avoid using words to harm others.

Church officials say they encounter an average of two cases of “spiritual oppression” daily. The St. Michael Center will also serve as the headquarters of the Philippine Association of Catholic Exorcists under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, becoming a hub for both spiritual care and the fight against evil.
