Muntinlupa City has been chosen as the location of the National Capital Region’s first innovation hub established by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), marking a key step in expanding science and technology-driven initiatives in Metro Manila. The launch was held on April 17 together with the turnover of a mobile disaster response vehicle.
The innovation hub, or iHub, is located at the Colegio de Muntinlupa campus and is designed as an open-access facility where ideas can be developed into practical, science-based solutions and startup ventures. It aims to support collaboration among students, researchers, and industry partners in turning concepts into real-world applications.
The hub will serve the MUNTAPARLAS area, covering Muntinlupa, Taguig, Pateros, Parañaque, and Las Piñas, widening access to innovation programs across southern Metro Manila.
Support for Startups, Research, and MSMEs
The iHub functions as a pre-incubation platform that assists students, researchers, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in developing their ideas. It offers programs on ideation, validation, skills training, mentorship, and networking with industry experts.
Officials said the goal is to help bridge the gap between research and application by guiding innovators in refining their concepts and identifying potential markets.
“There is no bad idea among our students, researchers, and innovators. Sometimes, ideas get stuck not because they are not good—sometimes it is due to limited support or because the market has not been clearly defined,” said DOST-NCR Regional Director Engr. Romelen T. Tresvalles.
The hub also hosts a unit of Project SARAi CeNTRO, which promotes data-driven agricultural planning. While Metro Manila is highly urbanized, nearby areas still have agricultural potential that can benefit from technology-based solutions supporting food security.
Boost in Disaster Preparedness
Alongside the iHub, DOST also turned over a Mobile Command and Control Vehicle (MoCCoV) to the Muntinlupa City government to enhance emergency response capabilities.
The vehicle is equipped with a weather monitoring system, rescue drone, satellite communication tools, surveillance equipment, and emergency medical supplies. It also includes a portable boat and a command center powered by solar and wind energy.
Mayor Rozzano Rufino B. Biazon said the equipment strengthens the city’s disaster preparedness and response capacity.
DOST said the initiative is part of its broader effort to integrate science-based technologies into disaster risk reduction and response systems nationwide.
