Rainwater Tanks and Drip Irrigation: Rio Tuba Miner Preps Bataraza Communities for Super El Niño

Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corp. (RTNMC) is promoting climate-resilient programs to help its partner communities in Bataraza, Palawan, get ready for the possible effects of a Super El Niño, Palawan News reported.

El Niño is a weather pattern that usually brings less rain and hotter conditions to the Philippines. The company’s focus is on three areas likely to be hit hardest: water supply, farming, and livelihoods.

Where the Plans Were Discussed

The programs were discussed during information, education, and communication (IEC) activities. These were part of the company’s 2027 Community Development Planning for partner mining communities in Bataraza and Barangay Latud in Rizal, Palawan, according to Palawan News.

The sessions looked at what a long drought could do to communities: less water, crop losses, and disruptions to daily life. Residents were encouraged to think about programs that fit the expected weather, especially those on water management and climate change adaptation.

What’s Being Proposed

According to the report, the proposed programs fall into three groups.

Water management and conservation - Community rainwater harvesting systems - Small farm reservoirs or water impounding projects - Solar-powered community water systems - Help with household water storage - Water conservation campaigns

Climate-resilient farming and environment - Drip irrigation for community farms - Climate-resilient community gardens - Drought-resistant crop programs - Community nurseries and tree-growing activities

Alternative livelihoods - Programs to help families keep earning during long dry spells

Why It Matters

RTNMC said early planning and coordination with communities and partner institutions are meant to make sure the programs match what residents actually need. The goal, the company said, is to help communities prepare for, adapt to, and recover from El Niño.

The planning is part of the company’s Social Development and Management Program (SDMP). Under Philippine rules, mining companies are required to run an SDMP to support the development of their host and neighboring communities, Palawan News noted.

What’s Next

The programs are still at the proposal stage, tied to the company’s 2027 community development plan. Palawan News did not report a budget or a start date for the projects.
