The Philippines is observing National Nutrition Month from July 1 to 31, 2026, carrying the theme “Sa Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN), Sama-Sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat” and the sub-theme “Nutrisyon at Kalikasan: Ating Pangangalagaan!”

This year's campaign reminds Filipinos that good nutrition starts with access to healthy, affordable food. It also highlights the importance of protecting the environment, recognizing that sustainable food production plays a vital role in ensuring every family has enough nutritious food on the table.

One practical way households can support these goals is by growing their own food at home.

A Small Garden Can Make a Big Difference

Backyard farming is becoming an increasingly practical solution for Filipino families. Even a small space can produce vegetables and herbs that provide fresh ingredients for daily meals, reduce grocery expenses, and encourage healthier eating habits.

Home gardens also promote sustainable practices such as composting, recycling kitchen waste into organic fertilizer, and making productive use of idle spaces. Beyond feeding their own families, households can also earn extra income by selling surplus harvests within their communities.

As food prices continue to fluctuate, growing food at home gives families greater food security while helping build more resilient communities.

Las Piñas Shows How Urban Gardening Works

Las Piñas has become a model for how urban gardening can improve nutrition and strengthen food security.

Senator Camille Villar has long championed urban farming, saying it empowers families to become more self-sufficient while providing an additional source of livelihood. She also emphasized that urban gardening teaches communities the value of composting, recycling, and producing healthy food sustainably.

The city's urban gardening program, launched in 2013, has grown through the participation of barangays, schools, and homeowners' associations. During the pandemic, Villar distributed vegetable seeds and organic fertilizers to help residents establish their own backyard gardens.

Former Senator Cynthia Villar has also continued sending vegetable seeds and organic fertilizers to communities across the country, encouraging more Filipinos to try backyard farming.

As National Nutrition Month is celebrated, these initiatives show that a simple backyard garden can help improve nutrition, protect the environment, and bring families one step closer to food security.
