From Child Contestant to Global Star
Sanchez first appeared on the AGT stage at just 10 years old during its debut season in 2006. While she reached the semifinals, her journey ended there. Years later, she rose to international fame as the runner-up on American Idol Season 11 in 2012, where her vocal performances earned her recognition from fans across the globe.
That chapter included a record deal, an album release, and a lasting bond with her Filipino fanbase, who celebrated her heritage as she openly embraced her roots from Samal, Bataan, alongside her Mexican background.
A Triumphant Return to the AGT Stage
Two decades after her first AGT attempt, Sanchez surprised many by returning to the same stage, this time, more seasoned and self-assured. During her audition, she revealed that she had recently learned she was pregnant, yet still delivered a stunning performance of Benson Boone’s Beautiful Things. The song earned her a Golden Buzzer from judge Sofía Vergara, instantly propelling her to the live rounds.
Despite being eight months along, Sanchez pressed forward, performing Alex Warren’s Ordinary in the quarterfinals and later delivering a soulful rendition of JVKE’s Golden Hour in the semifinals. In the finale, now nine months pregnant, she performed Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ Die With a Smile, which brought the crowd to its feet. Her heartfelt delivery sealed her victory and the $1-million prize.
Praise, Gratitude, and a Historic Victory
Vergara lauded Sanchez’s finale performance, telling her, “You look like a little pregnant angel. I mean, you look beautiful, your voice, I’ve never heard anything like that. Bravo, Jessica.”
Overcome with emotion, Sanchez broke into tears as her name was announced. “I’m sorry for getting so emotional. This is amazing, thank you so much,” she said on stage. In a later Instagram Live, she added, “God placed me here for a reason, and I honestly cannot believe I’m the winner. It’s insane, I’m still in so much shock!”
Second place went to Chris Turner, while Jourdan Blue finished third. But for many, the night belonged to Sanchez, whose journey had truly come full circle.
Impact Beyond the Stage
From her early days as a wide-eyed 10-year-old hopeful, to her runner-up stint on American Idol, and now as an AGT champion about to welcome her first child, Sanchez has cemented her place as one of the most inspiring stories in modern reality television.
Her win not only highlights her resilience and growth as an artist but also reinforces the global impact of Filipino talent, reminding fans worldwide that the Filipino voice continues to shine brightly on the international stage.
