The Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (Kontra-GaPi), one of the Philippines’ most dynamic performing arts groups, is set to bring the energy, rhythm, and soul of Filipino culture to North Africa for the very first time.

The 10-day cultural tour marks a double celebration: the 126th anniversary of Philippine Independence and the 50th year of diplomatic ties between the Philippines and Morocco. Philippine Ambassador to Morocco Leslie Baja announced that Kontra-GaPi will perform for the diplomatic corps on June 17, followed by a special show for the Filipino community on June 22.

Known for electrifying performances that mix indigenous instruments with powerful dance, chant, and ritual, Kontra-GaPi promises to light up the stage with the colors, sounds, and spirit of the Filipino people.

Uniting Cultures Through Music and Dance

Ambassador Baja couldn’t hide his excitement. “They have this amazing ability to draw people in—to make audiences feel the heartbeat of Filipino culture,” he said, recalling the group’s crowd-pulling performance during his diplomatic post in Switzerland.

Now, with Morocco as the next stop, Kontra-GaPi is set to connect two rich and vibrant cultures through the universal language of art. “This is more than just a performance—it’s a celebration of who we are,” Baja added.

More Than a Show: A Cultural Experience

For over three decades, under the leadership of Professor Pedro Abraham Jr., Kontra-GaPi has been sharing the Philippines’ artistic traditions with the world. But their mission goes beyond entertainment—they also hold lectures and workshops, giving people a deeper dive into the beauty of Filipino heritage.

As they take their passion and artistry to Morocco, Kontra-GaPi is ready to spark curiosity, build friendships, and proudly wave the Filipino flag on yet another world stage.
