The Philippines has expanded its agricultural footprint in the Middle East after an 18-metric-ton shipment of premium MD2 pineapples arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking another milestone in the country's export drive.
According to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the shipment consisted of 1,500 boxes of fresh MD2 pineapples sourced from farms in Tampakan, South Cotabato. The cargo arrived at the Port of Khor Fakkan on June 28 before being distributed across the UAE market.
The shipment was facilitated by Mensh Fil-Am Trading in partnership with Avante Agri-Products Philippines, Inc., and departed from the Unifrutti Wharf in Ilang, Davao City on June 6.
Growing Demand Fuels Export Expansion
Known for its exceptional sweetness, low acidity, and golden flesh, the MD2 variety is the world's leading commercial pineapple and continues to gain popularity in overseas markets.
The DA said the latest shipment reflects rising demand for premium Philippine tropical fruits in the Middle East and forms part of the government's strategy to diversify export destinations beyond traditional markets.
Officials added that shipments to the UAE are expected every two weeks, signaling sustained demand in one of the region's fastest-growing food import markets and strengthening the country's presence across the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Creating More Opportunities for Filipino Farmers
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel said expanding export markets translates to greater economic opportunities for Filipino farmers, workers, and agribusinesses.
"Every box of Philippine produce that reaches a new or existing market represents more income for farmers, more jobs for workers, and more value created at home. That is why we are aggressively pursuing new export opportunities for Philippine agriculture," Laurel said.
The initiative supports the DA's efforts to modernize Philippine agriculture while advancing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s agenda of improving farmers' incomes through stronger agricultural value chains and wider market access.
The export was coordinated by the DA's Office of the Agricultural Attaché in Dubai as part of its continuing efforts to strengthen trade partnerships and promote Philippine agricultural products across the Middle East.
