Access to legal advice could become more convenient for overseas Filipino workers under a proposed government program that would allow them to consult with lawyers in the Philippines remotely. The Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) has welcomed the initiative, which is intended to address legal concerns OFWs may encounter while working abroad.

Olaap Proposal Brings Legal Advice Online
The proposed Overseas Filipino Workers Legal Advisory Assistance Program (Olaap) was presented by the Office of the Cabinet Secretary as a dedicated channel for legal consultations. PAO chief Persida Rueda-Acosta lauded the proposal and said Secretary Benhur Abalos had recognized the range of legal issues that can affect OFWs.
These concerns include matters involving employment, family relations, and property. For Filipinos working outside the country, addressing such issues can involve seeking professional legal guidance from a significant distance.
Under Abalos’ plan, Olaap would make consultations available through secure online teleconference platforms. The setup would allow OFWs to speak with licensed lawyers in the Philippines without having to travel for a consultation or take on significant related expenses.
Making Legal Assistance More Accessible to OFWs
The proposal places accessibility at the center of the planned service by using online platforms to connect OFWs with legal professionals in the Philippines. This could provide a more practical avenue for workers who need guidance on legal matters while remaining overseas.
