For the first time in history, the Philippines has recorded a win at the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship, and the result has shaken the global standings. Alas Pilipinas jumped 12 spots in the world rankings after stunning powerhouse Egypt.
It was a milestone moment not just for the team but also for Philippine volleyball, ending a 64-year wait for a men’s world championship victory.

Breakthrough Performance on Home Soil
The national team entered the tournament as the second-lowest ranked squad, invited only because of the country’s hosting duties. But before a roaring home crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena, the Filipinos defied expectations with a four-set triumph over world No. 21 Egypt, 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21.
The tightly contested opening set the tone for the evening, with the Nationals saving multiple set points before sealing the win through a Kim Malabunga attack and a crucial ace by Leo Ordiales. Although they stumbled in the second frame, Alas Pilipinas regrouped, showing grit and composure to outplay their opponents in the third and fourth sets.
Team captain Bryan Bagunas delivered when it mattered most, exploding with 25 points off 23 attacks and two blocks, while also contributing 12 receptions. Ordiales emerged as the night’s surprise hero with 21 points, bouncing back strongly after a tough previous match. Veteran Marck Espejo chipped in 13 points, including the final block that sealed the historic win.
“Of course, this is history, I’m so happy and proud to be part of it. I’m honestly speechless that we won," Bagunas expressed in Filipino after the match.
A Victory That Resonates Beyond the Court
Head coach Angiolino Frigoni, who has overseen the team’s growth over the past 16 months, praised their performance and improvement. “What I expected is to play this kind of volleyball. When you play this kind of volleyball, for all the opponents, it’ll be difficult to play against us,” the Italian mentor said. He added that the victory was proof of the team’s progress and dedication.
With the win, Alas Pilipinas soared from world No. 89 to No. 77, an impressive leap that symbolizes their arrival on the international stage. More than the ranking boost, however, the victory has inspired Filipino fans and reignited hope that men’s volleyball in the Philippines can compete at the highest level.
The challenge continues as the Nationals prepare to face world No. 14 Iran next, but regardless of the outcome, their triumph over Egypt has already cemented their place in Philippine sports history.
