Applications for the competitive 2025 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program, which enables qualified Filipinos to work as assistant language instructors (ALTs) in Japan, are now ongoing, the Japanese Embassy said.

Slots for the Coordinator for International Relations (CIRs) position are also available in addition to ALTs.

Accepted Filipinos would serve as assistants in classes taught by Japanese English teachers in public, private, or municipal boards of education.

Jobs waiting

CIRs work primarily with local governments in Japan to support foreign exchange matters. They do this by translating papers, planning, designing, and implementing projects, communicating verbally and in writing with non-Japanese populations and inhabitants, and performing other relevant jobs.

The Philippines produced the biggest batch of qualifying JET participants in a single year in 2024, with over 120 of them making up the country's total of over 300 participants.

The JET program was established in 1987 with the goal of fostering greater understanding between Japanese and international citizens through localized foreign language learning and cultural immersion.

What would it take

In addition to being physically and psychologically ready to work overseas, applicants must be Philippine citizens, have a Bachelor's degree or higher or be able to receive one by the specified arrival date, and have strong communication skills in English.

Additionally, candidates for the CIR post must be proficient in Japanese (JLPT N1 or its equivalent).

The embassy website has the application forms in addition to the other prerequisites. Applications must be submitted by November 6 for ALT applicants and December 6 for CIR applicants.
