Filipinos from different walks of life gathered on Saturday to take part in the 2025 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day, the world’s largest volunteer movement for ocean and waterway protection. Carrying the local theme “Tayo ang Solusyon,” the event highlights how every Filipino can make a difference in protecting ecosystems that serve as natural shields against the impacts of climate change.
Environment Secretary Raphael Lotilla encouraged Filipinos to take pride in their participation. “Across Metro Manila and throughout the country, simultaneous cleanup activities are being held. Whether in designated sites or within your own communities, your participation matters,” he said.
Cleanup Efforts Across the Nation
As part of the country’s observance of National Cleanup Month and Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reported at least 298 cleanup sites nationwide.
Major locations include:
- * SM by the Bay in Pasay City
- * Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park
- * Tanza Marine Tree Park in Navotas
- * Manila Bay Dolomite Beach
- * Tullahan River in Quezon City
- * Pasig River in Pandacan, Manila
- * Baseco Lagoon in Manila
- * Coastal stretches behind Aseana City and Solaire Resort in Parañaque
Volunteers from schools, civic organizations, government offices, and private groups all joined forces to collect and properly dispose of trash, particularly single-use plastics that often end up polluting waterways.
Clean Seas as Climate Action
This year’s global ICC theme, “Clean Seas Against the Climate Crisis,” underscores the urgent call for ocean-based climate solutions, from conserving biodiversity to promoting sustainable marine resource use.
The Philippines’ participation reflects a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience. By cleaning coasts and rivers, Filipinos are not only keeping communities safer and healthier but are also contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change and protect marine life.
