Return to Form After Paris Glory
The Filipino gymnastics star is no stranger to this competition, having captured the floor exercise title in 2019 and the vault gold in 2021. After skipping last year’s edition to recover from his intense Paris Olympic campaign, Yulo is entering this year’s Worlds refreshed and ready to compete at the highest level.
Yulo returned to competition ten months after the Olympics, making a statement at the Asian Championships in Jecheon, South Korea last June. He dominated the floor exercise to take gold and added bronzes in the all-around, vault, and parallel bars, proving that his form remains world-class.
The 25-year-old will once again face top-tier competition in Jakarta, alongside teammates Juancho Miguel Besana, John Ivan Cruz, and Justine Ace de Leon. They are scheduled to compete in subdivision 6 of the men’s qualification on October 19 at 8:20 p.m.
“Right now I’m really focusing on doing all-arounds at the same time doing vault and floor,” Yulo said in a report by the FIG website.
Familiar Rivals Await
Yulo will once again meet his Olympic rivals, Israeli standout Artem Dolgopyat and Fil-British gymnast Jake Jarman, who finished behind him in the floor exercise final in Paris. Dolgopyat is the reigning floor champion from the 2023 World Championships, while Jarman took the vault crown in the same edition.
“I know that they (Dolgopyat and Jarman) are really working hard for the spot and I’m really grateful that I’m at their level and putting that much pressure on me, especially on floor and vault,” Yulo shared.
“It’s going to be a tough competition for me at the same time, but I’m going to make sure to prepare myself.”
As Yulo gears up for Jakarta, expectations are high for another strong performance from the Filipino gymnastics icon.
