The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has expanded its benefit packages for families of premature newborns, offering financial coverage of up to PHP135,000 for the most vulnerable infants. The initiative, announced on World Prematurity Day, aims to ease the burden of high medical costs and ensure that preterm babies receive timely, life-saving care.
Stronger Support for Early and Late Preterm Infants
Under the updated Z Benefits package, premature babies born between 24 weeks and less than 32 weeks of gestational age may receive financial aid of up to PHP135,000 to cover intensive care, diagnostics, medications, and other essential newborn services. This support is available in PhilHealth-accredited hospitals and specialized facilities nationwide.
For babies delivered between 32 and less than 37 weeks, PhilHealth will extend benefits ranging from PHP24,000 to PHP71,000 depending on the newborn’s medical condition and treatment needs. These packages are designed to lessen out-of-pocket expenses for families during a medically critical period.
Expanded Coverage for At-Risk Mothers
PhilHealth also introduced strengthened Z Benefits for expectant mothers at risk of preterm delivery, offering PHP600 to PHP4,000 in assistance. This includes coverage for conditions such as preterm labor, vaginal bleeding, PPROM (Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes), preeclampsia, and eclampsia.
The benefit ensures proper medical management and supports coordinated referral and transfer to higher-level facilities when complications arise, an important step in protecting both mothers and their unborn children.
Additional Aid for Preemies With Congenital Conditions
Premature babies born with congenital anomalies, including congenital heart disease or cleft lip and palate, may also qualify for additional PhilHealth financial support. This layered coverage aims to provide comprehensive care for infants facing multiple medical challenges early in life.
With prematurity remaining one of the leading causes of infant mortality worldwide, PhilHealth emphasized the importance of accessible care and adequate financial protection. The expanded packages reflect the agency’s effort to strengthen maternal and neonatal healthcare while reducing the financial stress on Filipino families.
