For years, Metro Manila has been the country’s main destination for major concerts and sporting events. But the opening of the SM Seaside Cebu Arena may position Cebu as a worthy contender. More than just a new venue, the arena gives artists, athletes, and fans another world-class space for live entertainment in the Visayas.
A Bigger Stage in the Region
The SM Seaside Cebu Arena is now one of the country’s largest indoor venues, with a standard seating capacity of around 16,000 and up to 25,000 for select events. Built to host concerts, sporting events, and other large-scale productions, the arena reflects Cebu’s growing role as a spot for massive gatherings.
Moreover, SM Prime President Jeffrey Lim believes the venue is a natural next stop for the region.
“Cebu has long been one of the country’s most dynamic markets. With this arena, we can bring more Filipino and international acts to the Visayas and strengthen the region’s place in the live entertainment circuit,” he said.
The Hype Has Started
Music-wise, the arena’s already gaining traction, starting with P-pop supergroup BINI’s Signals World Tour last July 11. LANY, Hillsong Worship, TJ Monterde, KZ Tandingan, and IV of Spades also have concerts lined up.
It’s also expected to become a hub for major sporting events. According to Lim, the arena could help boost sports tourism by attracting international competitions to Cebu.
“Sports tourism is something that we have missed out. That is one of the things that we will fully support. So hopefully, with this venue, they’re already thinking of bringing in international volleyball and women’s basketball,” he stated.
Setting Up The Next Concert Hub
For many years, international tours in the Philippines have often centered on Metro Manila. While factors such as tour schedules, production costs, and demand all influence where artists perform, having another large-scale venue gives concert promoters more options when planning Philippine stops. That could hold more meaning for fans in Visayas and Mindanao, who would often need to travel to Manila to watch their idols live.
With this in mind, the SM Seaside Cebu Arena could help make world-class entertainment more accessible, bringing the rush of live events closer to home and strengthening Cebu’s place on the country’s entertainment map.
