The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) officially launched the 2026 National ICT Month on Monday, rolling out thousands of free Wi-Fi sites and expanding the Government Network (GovNet) across Western Visayas. The launch ceremony was held at the University of the Philippines Auditorium in Iloilo City, highlighting the agency’s push for broader digital inclusion and stronger government connectivity in the region.
Thousands of Public Sites Now Connected
Under the Free Wi-Fi for All program, DICT activated internet connectivity in 2,020 public sites across Western Visayas. Of these, 1,521 locations were connected through Subscription of Internet Service, while 499 were installed under the Free Public Internet Access Program.
The service now covers key public facilities such as government hospitals, rural health units, public schools, state universities and colleges, libraries, parks, and transport terminals. DICT officials said the expansion aims to bridge the digital divide by providing reliable internet access to communities outside major urban centers.
Assistant Secretary for Special Concerns Christian Mark Guingcangco said the initiative ensures that more Filipinos can access essential online services, including education, information, and livelihood opportunities. He emphasized that internet connectivity has become a basic necessity in today’s digital-driven society.
GovNet Expansion Strengthens Public Service Delivery
DICT also expanded GovNet, its secure network linking government offices and institutions. Currently, 70 agencies and offices in Iloilo City are connected under the system.
During the launch, DICT signed agreements with the local governments of Miagao, Tubungan, Guimbal, and Passi City, paving the way for wider GovNet coverage in Western Visayas. The expansion is expected to improve coordination among government offices and enhance the efficiency of public service delivery.
Marking a Decade of Digital Progress
This year’s National ICT Month carries the theme “Isang Dekadang Digital: Konektado sa Puso at Serbisyo,” underscoring a decade of digital transformation efforts.
Undersecretary for Special Concerns Faye Condez-De Sagon said the initiative reflects DICT’s commitment to turning digital progress into real opportunities for Filipinos. Over the past decade, the agency has expanded connectivity in remote areas, built thousands of free Wi-Fi sites nationwide, strengthened the National Broadband Program, and improved cybersecurity systems.
DICT said these efforts lay the foundation for the next phase of the country’s digital transformation through deeper collaboration between national agencies and local government units.
