The streets of Iloilo City came alive with cyclists on Friday, June 5, as the 12th Iloilo Bike Festival officially got underway, opening with a Bike-to-Work Day ride that drew hundreds of participants from across the city.
Around 700 cyclists, including city government employees and officials, gathered at the Garden Atrium of Festive Walk Mall before setting off on a ceremonial ride through major roads. The event marked the beginning of one of Iloilo’s most anticipated community celebrations and highlighted the growing role of cycling in everyday urban life.
Cycling Takes Center Stage in Sustainable Transport Push
Leading the opening ceremonies were Assistant Festival Director and Executive Assistant Jay Treñas and members of the Iloilo Bike Council. Joining them was MMDA General Manager Gen. Nicolas Torre III, who took part in the festival launch alongside local leaders and cycling advocates.
Organizers said the Bike-to-Work Day ride reflects Iloilo City’s long-standing efforts to promote cycling as a safe, affordable, and environmentally responsible transportation option. Over the years, the city has invested in cycling infrastructure and programs that encourage residents to choose bicycles for work, school, and daily errands.
More Activities Ahead for Cyclists and Families
Beyond promoting sustainable mobility, the festival also serves as a platform to encourage healthier lifestyles and stronger community engagement.
A variety of activities are scheduled in the coming days, bringing together cycling enthusiasts, families, and advocates to celebrate the city’s vibrant bike culture. The event further reinforces Iloilo City’s reputation as one of the Philippines’ leading bike-friendly urban centers, where cycling continues to be both a practical mode of transport and a way of life.
