Manila To Open Senior And Pet-Friendly Park At Plaza Azul

Manila is set to welcome a new public park that caters to both senior citizens and pet owners, as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) spearheads redevelopment efforts at Plaza Azul in Pandacan. The project is part of the Metro Manila “Green Green Green” program and aims to transform an underused space into a vibrant community hub.

The initiative is a joint undertaking between the MMDA, the Manila city government, and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM). Beyond creating green open areas, the redevelopment will provide recreational facilities, wellness amenities, and spaces for community gatherings.

Features of the New Park

Plaza Azul will include open lawns for relaxation and activities, a children’s playground, outdoor fitness equipment, and a jogging path. For senior citizens, a dedicated pavilion will provide a safe and accessible place to socialize, exercise lightly, and participate in cultural programs.

The park will also offer a basketball court, multi-purpose court, park pavilion, kiosk area, and designated zones for community events. A secure pet area will allow dogs and other pets to play freely while encouraging social interaction.

“This project promotes the concept of nature-based solutions, such as using natural methods to grow trees and plants through the collection and use of rainwater. By applying these approaches, the project seeks to reduce maintenance costs while supporting environmental sustainability,” MMDA Chairman Don Artes explained.

Community and Environmental Benefits

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno highlighted how the redevelopment will benefit both residents and pets.

“It will surely benefit the community and residents of Manila, especially senior citizens, by providing a safe and accessible space for socializing, relaxation, light exercise, and cultural activities, while also enhancing local businesses, community pride, and overall well-being and helping pets stay active, reduce stress, and develop social skills in a secure, fun environment,” he noted.

DBM Undersecretary Goddess Hope Libiran added that the park aligns with broader sustainable development goals. “We are committed to funding efforts that make our cities greener, cleaner, and more sustainable,” she said.

For Manileños, the park offers a safe and inclusive environment that promotes wellness, strengthens community bonds, and provides a dedicated space for pets, all while supporting eco-friendly urban planning. By combining recreation, greenery, and sustainability, Plaza Azul’s transformation sets a model for other urban centers seeking to enhance public spaces and quality of life.
