Environmental initiatives and local governance took center stage as Navotas City received national recognition for its sustained efforts in protecting natural resources and promoting ecological responsibility. The acknowledgment underscores how coordinated programs at the local level can contribute meaningfully to broader environmental goals across Metro Manila.
The recognition, conferred by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–National Capital Region (DENR-NCR), highlights Navotas’ continued partnership with national agencies in advancing environmental protection, restoration, and community-based sustainability programs, particularly in a highly urbanized and coastal setting.

DENR-NCR Cites Strong Partnership and Programs
DENR-NCR granted the Green Legacy Award to Navotas City in recognition of its consistent contributions to environmental protection and restoration initiatives. The award is given annually to institutions, communities, and sectors that have demonstrated strong collaboration with the agency in promoting environmental care, natural resource management, and restoration efforts throughout Metro Manila.
Navotas was specifically acknowledged for the work of its Environment and Natural Resources Office, which has been actively involved in implementing programs focused on coastal and urban environmental management, solid waste management, and community engagement. These initiatives have been reinforced through regular coastal cleanups and environmental activities that directly involve local residents.
Among the city’s key environmental infrastructures are a greenhouse and a Materials Recovery Facility located in Barangay Tanza 2. These facilities serve as hubs for proper waste segregation, recycling, and sustainable waste disposal, supporting the city’s long-term environmental strategies.
City Leadership Emphasizes Shared Responsibility
Mayor John Rey Tiangco credited the recognition to the collective efforts of the local government and Navoteños, stressing that environmental protection requires shared responsibility.
“We are grateful to DENR–NCR for honoring Navotas as a Green Legacy Award inductee. This recognition highlights the collective efforts of our city government and our communities in protecting the environment, particularly in coastal and urban management and solid waste initiatives,” the mayor said.
Tiangco also called on residents to remain active participants in environmental programs.
“We continue to urge all Navoteños to support the efforts by practicing proper waste segregation and disposing of waste at the proper time,” he added.
The Green Legacy Award reinforces Navotas’ role as a partner in Metro Manila’s environmental stewardship, demonstrating how local governments can translate policy into action through infrastructure, community engagement, and sustained collaboration.
For ordinary Filipinos, especially those living in densely populated coastal cities, initiatives like those in Navotas show how effective waste management and environmental programs can reduce flooding risks, improve public health, and create cleaner communities, proving that environmental protection at the local level has tangible benefits for daily life and long-term national resilience.
