CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – The tourism town of Pagsanjan scaled down its traditional week-long Bangkero Festival into a one-day celebration held Saturday, April 25 in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Memorandum Order No. 110 declaring a national energy emergency due to the Middle East crisis.
Local officials said the adjustment formed part of government efforts to conserve energy and resources under a whole-of-government approach, while still sustaining the town’s cultural and tourism traditions.
“Araw ng mga Bangkero” Highlighted Boatmen’s Contribution
The celebration was formally renamed “Araw ng mga Bangkero,” placing emphasis on the town’s boatmen who have long been central to Pagsanjan’s tourism industry.
Mayor Jan Garcia said the simplified format aimed to give greater recognition to the bangkeros, whose skillful navigation through strong river currents has remained a defining feature of the town’s world-renowned river tours.
He added that despite the reduced program, the event continued to honor their contribution, resilience, and role in supporting the local economy.
Community Activities and Closing Program Held
The one-day celebration featured a boat race competition that showcased the coordination and strength of local boat operators, alongside traditional Filipino parlor games that brought the community together.
Assistance packages were also distributed to support bangkeros and their families, followed by a closing program at the town plaza featuring performances from local artists and guest entertainers.
Anchored on the theme “Isang Araw. Isang Diwa. Isang Bayan,” the event preserved the spirit of Pagsanjan’s river heritage and paid tribute to its boatmen despite the scaled-down festivities.
