The Manila city government has opened its health centers to provide free doxycycline to residents who have been exposed to floodwaters as part of its efforts to prevent leptospirosis following heavy rains.
The Manila Health Department encouraged individuals who waded through flooded areas to visit the nearest city health center and avail themselves of the free medication.
In an advisory, the department announced that health centers are temporarily prioritizing leptospirosis-related services.
“Our health centers are currently operating solely for leptospirosis-related services; regular check-ups are temporarily suspended. If you are experiencing any health issues, please go to the nearest local government unit hospital in your area,” the statement reads.

Health Officials Warn of Leptospirosis Risk
The Manila Health Department reminded the public that leptospirosis can lead to fever, body aches, vomiting, yellowing of the skin, and other serious health complications if left untreated.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) reported a 1 percent increase in leptospirosis cases compared to the 2,461 cases recorded during the same period last year.
The health agency also cautioned that the presence of Typhoon Inday within the Philippine Area of Responsibility increases the likelihood of heavy rainfall and flooding, conditions that heighten the risk of contracting the disease.
“While Typhoon Inday is within the Philippine Area of Responsibility, heavy rains and possible flooding are expected in some areas. This poses the risk of leptospirosis, particularly for those wading through floodwaters, mud, or contaminated water,” the DOH said.
Public Advised to Avoid Floodwaters
To reduce the risk of infection, the DOH advised the public to avoid walking through floodwaters whenever possible. If crossing flooded areas cannot be avoided, the agency recommended wearing boots and covering any cuts or wounds with waterproof bandages to minimize exposure to contaminated water.
The city's distribution of free anti-leptospirosis medication aims to provide immediate protection for residents who may have been exposed during flooding while reinforcing public awareness about preventive measures during the rainy season.
As heavy rains and flooding continue to affect many communities, timely access to preventive medication and proper health guidance can help reduce the number of leptospirosis infections.
