The city government of Ilagan is expanding its education support through a major scholarship initiative aimed at strengthening healthcare-related studies. A total of P100 million has been set aside to support thousands of students pursuing medical and allied health degrees beginning in August.
The program will benefit around 6,400 students who are set to enroll at the newly inaugurated City of Ilagan College. The institution officially opened during a ceremony held on Monday, coinciding with the city’s 340th anniversary celebration, marking a significant milestone in its local education efforts.

Expanding Access to Higher Education in Ilagan
City officials emphasized that the establishment and operation of the college are intended to make higher education more accessible to young people in Ilagan and surrounding areas. By localizing tertiary education, students are given the opportunity to study closer to home without the need to relocate to major urban centers.
Mayor Josemarie Diaz underscored that the initiative is not only about access but also long-term opportunity creation for graduates. He pointed out that strengthening education within the city would eventually translate into employment prospects in the health sector and related fields.
“The city government’s operation of the college will open up opportunities and bring education closer to the youth in Ilagan and nearby towns and cities,” Diaz said.
Strengthening Health Education and Future Workforce
The city also highlighted its existing healthcare infrastructure as part of its long-term plan to support graduates. Ilagan operates two public hospitals, which may serve as potential employment pathways for students after completing their studies.
“We have two city government operated hospitals here—the City of Ilagan Medical Center and the San Antonio Medical Hospital—which will possibly absorb them later,” the mayor said.
In addition to its own college operations, the local government has entered into a memorandum of agreement with Adamson University. Under the partnership, allied health programs will be offered starting in August, including Nursing, Psychology, Medical Technology, Radiologic Technology, and Information Technology. This collaboration aims to broaden academic offerings and strengthen training quality for students.
The initiative is expected to significantly impact both education and healthcare development in Ilagan. By investing heavily in scholarships and local academic infrastructure, the city is helping build a more skilled workforce while reducing the financial burden on families, ultimately contributing to improved healthcare services and greater employment opportunities in the region.
