The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has officially approved the creation of a 28-hectare mega ecozone in Sofronio Española, Palawan—marking a significant step forward in the government’s push for regional development. The project, proposed by conglomerate Fides Global and its local unit Naga Bioenergy Corp., will be classified as an agro-industrial economic zone.

Located in Barangay Pulot Shore, the ecozone is envisioned to serve as a hub for agribusiness, renewable energy, and sustainable manufacturing. According to PEZA, this will be the first and only PEZA-registered ecozone in Palawan, positioning the island province as a strategic location for investors seeking green development opportunities outside major urban centers.

“This marks a historic milestone for the Philippines,” said BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. on Wednesday, June 4, expressing his support for PEZA’s decision.

Boosting Local and National Economies

The approval of the Palawan Mega Ecozone is expected to attract billions in investments, generate thousands of jobs, and stimulate local entrepreneurship. Officials believe the zone will create employment opportunities not only in industrial operations but also in supporting sectors such as logistics, agriculture, and technical services.

“With a strategic location, abundant land, and strong government backing, the project will redefine urban planning, green energy solutions, and economic zones, setting a new benchmark for sustainable development in the country,” Catapang added in his statement.

The project also aligns with the Marcos administration’s broader push to spread economic growth beyond Metro Manila and into underdeveloped regions. PEZA Director General Tereso Panga noted that the ecozone can serve as a catalyst for long-term inclusive growth in Palawan and nearby provinces.

Sustainability at the Core

Environmental sustainability is central to the project’s design. The proponents have committed to implementing renewable energy solutions and environmentally sound waste management systems. As Palawan is known for its ecological richness, the project will undergo environmental impact assessments and regulatory compliance to ensure minimal disruption to local ecosystems.

PEZA has emphasized that the ecozone must adhere to sustainable development practices to balance economic growth with environmental preservation.

Looking Ahead: Transformative Potential

The establishment of the Palawan Mega Ecozone could be a turning point for the province. Beyond jobs and investments, the zone can improve local infrastructure, enhance access to technology, and position Palawan as a model for sustainable industrial development. As it moves into the implementation phase, stakeholders are hopeful the project will bridge economic progress with ecological responsibility — turning Palawan into a future-ready economic hub.
