Baguio City is gearing up to take a bold step into the future with the proposed establishment of a PHP248-million Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics training center and innovation hub. The project, spearheaded by the Cordillera State Institute for Technology Education (CSITE) under TESDA-CAR, is designed to reinforce Baguio’s smart city program while equipping residents with vital skills for an increasingly technology-driven world.
According to CSITE executive director Daisy Bungallon, the facility will not only provide training opportunities but also serve as a breeding ground for innovation and research that could eventually be commercialized. “We want to empower local talent so they can contribute to the city’s growth and keep up with global trends in AI and robotics,” she said.
CSITE Proposes Site for Development
CSITE has requested approval from the city government to use a 500-square-meter property adjacent to its main campus, which was identified in the initial proposal. However, Bungallon noted that at least 2,500 square meters would be ideal to accommodate the center, innovation hub, and spaces for equipment and product development.
The project is seen as a significant investment in education and technology, positioning Baguio as a leader in innovation in Northern Luzon. Once operational, the facility is expected to boost not only training but also opportunities for startups, tech-driven enterprises, and collaborative projects with industry players.
Consultations with Stakeholders Underway
Discussions with the city government are ongoing, as the proposed site currently serves multiple purposes. The lot is being used as an open space by Quezon Elementary School pupils and also functions as an evacuation area for nearby barangays.
To address these concerns, a public hearing was held earlier this week where the Department of Education–Baguio Schools Division Office and affected barangays were asked to submit their position papers. The outcome of these consultations will determine the final approval of the project site.
If granted the green light, the AI and robotics innovation facility will mark a major milestone in Baguio’s journey toward becoming a true smart city—where technology, education, and community development converge.
