Independent animated musical Plump Blossom is set to arrive in Philippine cinemas on Sept. 23, with its creators describing it as one of the country's first Filipino-made AI-assisted animated feature films.
Written, produced, and directed by Kap Rossana, the film combines traditional filmmaking with artificial intelligence tools to help bring its story to life. While AI assisted in production, the filmmakers emphasized that it served only as a creative tool, with all artistic decisions remaining in human hands.
Kap said the project took months of writing, directing, editing, and refining before reaching its final version, highlighting the dedication behind the independent production.
Filmmakers challenge misconceptions about AI
The production team said Plump Blossom aims to dispel the misconception that AI can create a feature-length movie with little effort. Instead, they described AI as one of many tools used throughout the filmmaking process.
"There were many days we honestly thought we would never cross the finish line. "Making this film was an uphill battle that tested our patience, creativity, and determination every single day,” Kap said.
She also stressed that the film's heart came from the people behind it.
"AI didn't make this movie. People did. AI was simply one of the many tools we used. The heart, the storytelling, the music, and every creative choice came from human hands," Kap added.
Tang Dynasty-inspired story comes to life
Inspired by China's Tang Dynasty, Plump Blossom follows Princess Ruo Hua, whose kindness and courage help her overcome the challenges she faces. Presented as a full-length animated musical, the film combines fantasy storytelling with original songs.
The voice cast includes Candice Tan as Princess Ruo Hua, Don Puno as General Jian, Gutch Gutierrez as Chef Bao, Chad Williams as General Feathers, Thunderson Tan as Wen, Yeng Her as Yuan Yuan, and Audie Gemora as the Emperor. Singer-actress Paulina Yeung performs the songs featured in the original soundtrack.
Set for its theatrical debut on Sept. 23, Plump Blossom showcases how emerging technology can support filmmaking while keeping human creativity, storytelling, and artistic vision at the center of the production.
