After years of uncertainty about boxing's Olympic future, the International Olympic Committee unanimously decided to include the sport in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics schedule.

Due to continued concerns about the International Boxing Association (IBA), boxing was excluded from the first sports schedule approved by the IOC Session in February 2022 for LA28.

Following long-running disagreements over governance, finances, and the fairness of fights and judging, the IOC suspended the IBA in 2019.

Shortly after some IBA members split off to join World Boxing, the IOC took the unprecedented step of completely banning the IBA from the Olympic movement in 2023.

World boxing takes over

Before Olympic qualifying events begin, probably next year, World Boxing is anticipated to examine and update the regulations pertaining to female eligibility.

World Boxing was founded in 2023 by American and British boxing officials, and since then, it has expanded to include nations with significant sway in Olympic circles.

With the exception of Stockholm 1912, when the sport was prohibited by local law, Boxing has been contested at every modern Olympic Games since its introduction in 1904.

PH’s best Olympic bets

Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, two Filipina boxers, both won bronze at the previous year's Olympics in Paris.

Following a silver in Tokyo 2020, it was Petecio's second Olympic medal, becoming one of the winningest Filipino Olympians ever.

Other prominent Olympic boxers from the Philippines are Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial, who both won medals in the Tokyo Olympics.
