Protect Yourself From W.I.L.D. Diseases This Rainy Season, Says DOH

As the rainy season sets in, the Department of Health (DOH) is urging Filipinos to take preventive measures against illnesses commonly associated with wet weather. The agency warned that water-borne diseases, influenza-like illnesses, leptospirosis, and dengue, collectively known as “W.I.L.D.” diseases, remain a major public health concern during this time of year.

DOH spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo advised individuals who have been exposed to floodwaters to seek medical attention, even if they are not yet experiencing symptoms.

“Kung tayo po ay lumusob dahil hindi natin naiwasan o kung anuman ang dahilan, kahit anong baha po 'yan, tayo po ay kumonsulta sa ating pinakamalapit na health center. Meron naman po tayong mga libreng gamot,” Domingo said.

He noted that government health centers offer free medicines and services to help prevent complications from flood-related illnesses.

Simple Steps Can Help Prevent Dengue

Part of the DOH's rainy season campaign focuses on dengue prevention through the agency’s “4Ts” strategy: Taob, Taktak, Tuyo, at Takip.

The campaign encourages households and communities to eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed by overturning containers, removing collected rainwater, keeping surroundings dry, and covering water storage containers.

The DOH also reminded the public that dengue-carrying mosquitoes are most active between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., making protection during these hours especially important.

Encouragingly, dengue cases have declined this year. The DOH reported 50,727 dengue cases from January to May 2026, a 56 percent decrease from the 114,308 cases recorded during the same period in 2025.

Public Advised to Take Precautions Throughout the Rainy Season

To reduce the risk of illness, the health department is encouraging Filipinos to stay updated on weather advisories and take practical precautions when going outdoors, including the use of umbrellas, raincoats, and boots.

The agency also stressed the importance of drinking safe and clean water, particularly in areas affected by flooding or heavy rains.

As W.I.L.D. diseases continue to pose seasonal health threats, the DOH urged the public to remain alert and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms develop. Early consultation and proper preventive measures, the agency said, remain the best defense against rainy season illnesses.
