South Korea is still the Philippines’ leading source of foreign tourists in 2024, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
In a statement released Tuesday, June 10, the BI reported that 1,761,281 South Korean nationals visited the country last year. The Philippines continues to attract South Koreans not just for its scenic destinations but also for its thriving English language programs, which are especially popular with families during school breaks.
“The Philippines remains a preferred destination for South Koreans not only because of our beautiful landscapes and beaches but also because of our strong English programs,” said BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado. “These programs are particularly popular during school holidays,” he added.
Security Efforts Help Boost Arrivals
The increase in tourist arrivals was also supported by strengthened security efforts. The BI credited the Department of Tourism (DOT) for implementing measures to ensure the safety of foreign visitors, boosting confidence among travelers.
“As President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has highlighted, tourism is a key driver of our economic recovery and growth. We fully support the DOT’s efforts to make our borders safe and welcoming for international guests,” Viado stated.
Closer Cooperation with South Korea
To further protect visiting South Koreans, Philippine authorities are working closely with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and law enforcement agencies. This partnership focuses on intelligence-sharing, monitoring transnational crimes, and ensuring quick responses to incidents involving Korean nationals.
“We maintain active cooperation with the South Korean Embassy and law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of their citizens here. This collaboration builds trust and reassures visitors that their safety is a shared responsibility,” Viado added.
