The municipality of Bolinao in Pangasinan has been hailed as the Destination of the Year by the Department of Tourism (DOT), a recognition that cements its place as North Luzon’s next big tourism hotspot. The award highlights the town’s sustainable projects, support programs, and innovative marketing campaigns.
“We are one town tourist destination. Meaning, a one-stop-shop. Everything is here—beaches, waterfalls, a river, heritage sites, and of course, the strong partnership between the communities and stakeholders,” said Bolinao senior tourism operations officer Mary De Guzman Suarez.
Bolinao bested finalists Loboc, Bohol and Boracay, Malay, Aklan with its entry featuring best practices in sustainable tourism. It also leads western Pangasinan and the Ilocos Region in tourist arrivals, recording 232,000 overnight visitors in 2024.
Communities at the Heart of Tourism
Suarez stressed that Bolinao’s strength lies in its people. “We have a lot of associations affiliated with the tourism office. We help them with technicalities such as paperwork and grant applications with the Department of Labor and Employment,” she explained.
From tricycle drivers and tour guides to resort owners and souvenir makers, the entire community contributes to Bolinao’s tourism ecosystem. Suarez said the award is not only a triumph for Bolinao but also for nearby towns that benefit from the rising visitor numbers.
Creativity Meets Sustainability
Bolinao also takes pride in its creative industries. Buri weaving, a livelihood for some 30 women from Santiago Island, has gained both national recognition and international markets. Local buri products are in demand from resorts and hotels, while tree planting initiatives ensure sustainability of raw materials.
Their handicrafts recently became finalists in the Department of Labor and Employment’s Best Livelihood Program. “Storms tested us, but triumph defines us,” Suarez said, dedicating the recognition to all local stakeholders.
With its pristine beaches, iconic rock formations, vibrant festivals, and community-driven programs, Bolinao is emerging as North Luzon tourism’s next big thing—a premier destination blending natural beauty, cultural heritage, and the warmth of Filipino hospitality.
