More Filipinos needing major heart procedures may gain access to treatment as PhilHealth continues to expand its network of healthcare providers under the Z Benefit program.
As of June 30, 2026, a total of 123 hospitals and healthcare facilities nationwide were providing heart surgery services covered by the program, according to PhilHealth President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Beverly Ho.
Ho shared the figure during the World Heart Day celebration in Manila, where she discussed PhilHealth's existing and planned benefits for patients with cardiovascular conditions.
She acknowledged that more providers are needed, especially in areas where specialized cardiac services remain difficult to access.
New coverage for emergency heart procedures being considered
PhilHealth's Z Benefit program provides financial coverage for serious illnesses that may require prolonged hospitalization and early intervention.
Among the heart procedures currently included are coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, total correction of tetralogy of Fallot, and surgery for ventricular septal defects among children.
Ho said PhilHealth is also looking at adding emergency CABG surgery to its coverage.
CABG is performed to restore blood flow to the heart when coronary arteries become blocked or narrowed. For patients facing a cardiovascular emergency, faster access to the procedure can be critical.
According to Ho, expanding cardiovascular benefits is part of PhilHealth's continuing efforts to respond to the healthcare needs of its members.
PhilHealth also targets expanded care for children
Beyond emergency cardiac procedures, PhilHealth is exploring broader coverage for congenital heart conditions, particularly for children who require specialized treatment.
Ho said the agency will continue working with the Philippine Heart Association and other members of the cardiac care community to strengthen access to specialized services.
The developments come as the global health community marks World Heart Day every September 29, an annual observance focused on raising awareness about cardiovascular disease and reducing preventable and premature deaths linked to heart conditions.
