The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a crucial PHP96.5-million flood mitigation project in Barangay Calzada, Mabini town, Pangasinan. The project, part of the department’s Sustainable Infrastructure Projects Alleviating Gaps (SIPAG), aims to provide long-term protection to communities vulnerable to flooding.
Strengthening Flood Protection in Vulnerable Areas
The newly constructed flood mitigation structure spans 259 meters in length and 17 meters in width, positioned along the Balingcaguing River (Calzada Section). It was designed to shield nearby communities and residential areas from the damaging effects of seasonal flooding. With frequent flood events in the region, the project is expected to significantly reduce risks to lives and property.
Rapid Completion Under the Regular Infrastructure Program
The structure was completed in less than a year, with construction starting in 2024. The swift completion was made possible by funding from the Regular Infrastructure Program, highlighting DPWH’s efficiency in addressing urgent infrastructure needs. Esperanza Tinaza, DPWH-Ilocos Region information officer, emphasized that the project’s timely execution reflects the department's commitment to disaster resilience.
Ensuring Long-Term Safety
This flood mitigation initiative is part of DPWH’s broader efforts to safeguard communities across Pangasinan from flooding. By enhancing flood management systems, the department aims to ensure the safety of residents and reduce the risk of disaster-related damage. The completed project marks an important step forward in creating sustainable, flood-resilient infrastructure in the region.
