Occidental Mindoro State College Officially Becomes A University After CHEd Approval

Occidental Mindoro State College has reached a major milestone in its decades-long history after officially securing university status from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Following the approval, the institution will now carry the name Occidental Mindoro State University (OMSU), marking a significant development for higher education in the province.

The transition became official on June 17 and was made possible through Republic Act 11587, a measure authored by former representative Josephine Ramirez-Sato. The change elevates the institution's standing and reflects its compliance with the standards required for university recognition.

Years of Preparation Lead to University Status

Before receiving approval, the institution underwent a series of assessments and evaluations to ensure it met CHED’s requirements for conversion into a university. These reviews examined the school's academic programs, governance, facilities, and overall capacity to fulfill the responsibilities expected of a state university.

The achievement was welcomed by OMSU officials, who described it as a landmark moment not only for the institution but also for the people of Occidental Mindoro.

“This is a historic moment for all Mindoreños, especially for the youth who wish to study at a university,” OMSU President Elbert Edaniol said.

The university chief also recognized the efforts of those who helped shape the institution through the years.

“This remarkable milestone reflects the hard work and dedication of the institution's past and present administration, faculty, and staff, as well as the collective pride and aspirations of the island province,” Edaniol added.

From Barrio High School to State University

The institution’s roots trace back to 1966 when it began as a barrio high school. It later expanded and was formally chartered as the Occidental Mindoro National College on June 24, 1983 through Batas Pambansa 531.

Another major transformation came on July 27, 2009 when Republic Act 9747 renamed the school as Occidental Mindoro State College. More than a decade later, the institution has now achieved full university status, reflecting its continued growth and development.

The recognition is expected to strengthen educational opportunities in Occidental Mindoro by enhancing the institution’s ability to offer advanced academic programs, research initiatives, and community services. For many students in the province, the conversion to a state university could mean greater access to quality higher education closer to home, reducing the need to leave the island in pursuit of university-level studies.
