As the Holy Week travel surge approaches, the Department of Health (DOH) is ramping up its emergency preparedness by activating a nationwide Code White Alert starting March 30. The measure places hospitals, emergency rooms, and response teams on heightened readiness to manage potential health incidents during one of the country’s busiest travel periods.
The Code White Alert, which will remain in effect until April 6, ensures that medical personnel, supplies, and facilities are available around the clock. It covers not only DOH hospitals but also the central office and regional Centers for Health Development, reinforcing a coordinated response system for emergencies such as road accidents, injuries, and other health-related concerns.
Nationwide Readiness for Peak Travel
The move comes as millions of Filipinos prepare to travel to provinces and vacation spots for Holy Week. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), around 6.5 million passengers are expected to pass through 44 commercial airports, with peak travel projected from March 28 to April 5. This follows last year’s 18 percent increase in passenger volume, reaching 6 million compared to 5.1 million in 2024.
With the anticipated influx of travelers, authorities are prioritizing readiness to respond quickly to any medical emergencies that may arise across transport hubs, highways, and tourist destinations. The alert status ensures that healthcare systems remain fully operational despite the increased demand.
Public Advised to Take Precautions
DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo emphasized that while the agency is prepared, individual responsibility remains crucial.
“Even as DOH is ready to rescue this Holy Week, health and safety begin with you. Stay hydrated as the heat is on: drink 7 to 8 glasses of clean and plain water a day, except for patients under medical supervision,” Domingo said in an advisory.
He further reminded the public to take extra precautions amid rising temperatures and heavy travel conditions.
“Wear loose and light-colored clothing following the norms required by the places to visit. Avoid direct sunlight from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep vehicles well maintained; rest well, and do not drink and drive. Choose dry and sour food for packed lunches, avoiding those that spoil easily,” he added.
For emergencies, the DOH urged the public to contact the nationwide hotline 911 for immediate assistance.
As millions of Filipinos take to the roads and skies this Holy Week, the activation of the Code White Alert highlights the importance of preparedness, not just from authorities, but from travelers themselves.
