The Philippines is setting its sights on a strong showing at the World Boxing Championships (WBC) in Liverpool, with a seven-strong lineup representing the country on September 4 to 14. Filipino boxers are preparing to take on the world stage in hopes of securing medals for the nation.

Mark Ashley Fajardo, Junmilardo Ogayre, Ofelia Magno, and Jay Bryan Baricuatro departed Manila on Monday to join the delegation. They will link up with Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Carlo Paalam, along with Riza Pasuit and Ronald Chavez Jr., who have been in Britain ahead of the tournament for early training. The group is currently traveling via Hong Kong before heading to Liverpool.

A Strong Team With International Experience

The squad includes seasoned pugilists with international credentials, boosting hopes for a podium finish. Paalam’s Olympic silver and Pasuit’s extensive experience give the team a competitive edge, while newcomers like Fajardo and Baricuatro bring fresh energy. Their participation demonstrates the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines’ (ABAP) commitment to fielding a balanced roster of veterans and rising talents.

Paris Olympic bronze medalist Aira Villegas, although not competing in the tournament, has taken on a leadership role within the group. She has been instrumental in preparing and guiding her fellow boxers during training sessions.

Villegas is described as taking on the “vital role of leading the charge to ensure that our Filipina boxers are well-prepared and guided as they take on this prestigious tournament,” the Tacloban City Information Office stated on August 20.

Preparing for a Global Stage

While training in Sheffield, Villegas also had the opportunity to meet Olympic gold medalist Lauren Price, providing added motivation for the Philippine squad. These interactions highlight the level of exposure and preparation Filipino athletes are receiving ahead of the competition.

The World Boxing Championships is hosted by World Boxing, which is now recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the official governing body of the sport. This tournament will serve as a critical benchmark for boxers as the sport moves toward the next Olympic cycle, culminating in the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

With experienced medalists, promising newcomers, and strong preparation, the Philippines is hopeful that its boxers can deliver standout performances in Liverpool and bring home honors.
