Mothers are often the quiet force behind every household. From preparing meals and guiding children to managing finances and emotional needs, they carry responsibilities that rarely pause. Many mothers also juggle professional careers while continuing their duties at home, making their role both physically and emotionally demanding.

Mother’s Day offers a moment of appreciation, but for many families, it also highlights a deeper truth: the work of mothers never stops, even after the celebration ends. Their love, sacrifice, and resilience extend far beyond a single day on the calendar.

The Challenges Behind the Strength

Despite their vital role, many mothers face persistent challenges. Rising living costs continue to strain family budgets, while access to affordable healthcare remains uneven, especially for maternal services. Working mothers often struggle with limited workplace flexibility, forcing them to balance employment and childcare without adequate support.

Solo mothers carry even heavier responsibilities, raising children alone while ensuring financial stability. The emotional toll of parenting, combined with economic pressure, often leaves little room for rest or self-care. These struggles reflect a need for stronger, more consistent support systems for mothers in all walks of life.

Laws and Efforts to Support Mothers

In response to these challenges, various laws and government programs have been introduced to support mothers and families. The Expanded Maternity Leave Law provides longer paid leave for new mothers, while the Solo Parents Welfare Act offers assistance to single parents. The Magna Carta of Women also ensures protection and equal opportunities for women in different sectors.

Adding to these efforts, President Bongbong Marcos has recently announced a significant expansion of maternity benefits under the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, aiming to ease the financial pressure on Filipino families and ensure safer and more dignified childbirth experiences.

Meanwhile, Senator Camille Villar, the youngest woman senator, has also been actively pushing measures aimed at improving the lives of mothers. Her proposed bills include flexible work arrangements for pregnant women and new mothers, allowing them to better balance work and family life. She also introduced the Barangay Breastfeeding Centers Act, which seeks to establish breastfeeding support spaces in communities to assist nursing mothers. Additionally, she has pushed for stronger maternal healthcare protection to ensure safer pregnancies and better access to essential medical services.

Mother’s Day is a meaningful reminder of gratitude, but true appreciation for mothers goes beyond greetings and gifts. It is reflected in consistent support, stronger policies, and a society that values their everyday sacrifices all year round.
