The Philippines has launched its first locally designed and built electric passenger ferry, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push for sustainable transportation.

Named M/B Dalaray, the e-ferry can carry up to 40 passengers and three crew members, operating for as long as three hours on a full charge.

Starting November, the vessel will serve commuters along the Pasig River, linking the cities of Pasig, Makati, Mandaluyong, Taguig, and Manila. The project was developed through a partnership among the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), the University of the Philippines–Diliman, and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said the M/B Dalaray embodies the creativity and determination of Filipino innovators working together for a cleaner future.

“Ito ay produkto ng pambihirang galing, sipag at pagkakaisa ng mga Pilipino,” he said.

The e-ferry is part of the government’s broader effort to cut carbon emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, while showcasing how local technology can be harnessed for sustainable solutions.

Cleaner Rivers, Easier Commutes

Officials said the e-ferry will not only help protect the environment but also ease traffic congestion by offering an alternative route for daily commuters.

MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan said the project could transform how Filipinos move around Metro Manila.

“Malaki ang matutulong nito upang mabawasan ang problema sa trapiko at magbigay ng mas komportableng biyahe para sa mga pasahero,” she said.

Beyond daily transport, the initiative also seeks to reinvigorate river-based tourism and boost local economies, paving the way for a cleaner, modern, and people-centered transport system in the years ahead.
