Gab Pangilinan to Star as Mary Magdalene in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

Filipina theater star Gab Pangilinan is set to play Mary Magdalene in the international touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar, which will run at The Theatre at Solaire from May 2 to 31. The Manila season was originally scheduled to close on May 24 but was extended by a week due to strong audience demand. Producers confirmed no further extensions will be added beyond May 31.

Career Milestone for a Celebrated Stage Actress

Pangilinan’s casting marks a major highlight in her growing international theater presence. She is known for emotionally rich performances in productions such as The Last Five Years, Side Show, Ang Huling El Bimbo, and Mula sa Buwan.

A three-time Philstage Gawad Buhay nominee, she also won Best Leading Female Performance (Digital) at the Asian Television Awards. Industry observers see her casting as a strong representation of Filipino theater talent in global touring productions.

The Music and Story Behind the Iconic Rock Opera

With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar began as a 1970 concept album before premiering on Broadway in 1971. The rock opera tells the story of the final days of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Judas Iscariot, blending biblical narrative with rock music influences.

Mary Magdalene plays a key emotional role in the musical, delivering the classic ballad “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” one of musical theater’s most recognizable songs.

Strong Audience Demand Drives Manila Extension

The 2026 tour is produced by GMG Productions with Crossroads Live and Work Light Productions. Tickets for the Manila run are available through TicketWorld.

The extended run reflects strong local support for international theater productions in Manila’s live entertainment scene.
