Many Filipinos struggle to manage everyday waste, from plastic cups to leftover food. To make sustainable habits approachable, SM Supermalls launched the Waste-Free Future Manual at its first Sustainability Expo. The 17-page visual guide is designed to help people navigate waste management touchpoints in malls through a simple “Learn – Practice – Champion” workflow.

Building Lasting Habits Through Small Actions

The manual emphasizes that even minor actions can reduce waste sent to landfills. It pairs short, actionable steps with clear visuals and trivia to make learning intuitive. The workflow encourages people to first understand the problem, then practice proper disposal, and finally share these habits with others.

By following small, structured routines, individuals can gradually make sustainable practices part of daily life, helping the environment without feeling overwhelmed.

Identifying Common Waste for Effective Disposal

SM’s sustainability team identified the top 10 common waste items in malls, including PET bottles, single-use plastics, coffee cups, soiled food containers, napkins, sanitary products, and food waste.

The manual instructs proper disposal through Recyclable-Disposable-Compostable (RDC) bins. Blue bins for PET bottles, gray bins for disposable items, and green bins for food waste. This system makes it easy for anyone to correctly separate waste in SM Malls.

Electronic waste, like batteries and broken gadgets, is a growing concern worldwide. SM provides e-waste bins in Cyberzone areas to ensure responsible disposal of small electronic devices.

Plastic waste is also addressed through a collection program that has gathered 70,000 kilograms of clean, dry plastics since 2019. Initiatives like these make recycling accessible and encourage active participation in the circular economy.

Turning Trash Into Community Action

The Trash-to-Cash program motivates mallgoers to segregate clean, dry recyclables in exchange for incentives. The company also organizes coastal cleanups through SM Cares, diverting 200,000 kilograms of marine litter nationwide last year. Another cleanup is scheduled on March 22 at multiple SM locations for World Water Day.

These programs demonstrate how individual actions, when combined with organized initiatives, can have measurable environmental impact.

Clear Guidance as Tool for Sustainable Change

“Communicating waste management practices clearly and easily helps our stakeholders support our vision for a Waste-Free Future,” said Liza Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability.

The Waste-Free Future Manual provides a straightforward, visual toolkit for Filipinos to learn, practice, and champion eco-friendly habits, showing that small steps can create significant change for the planet.
